Mecca

Mecca, Saudi Arabia

West Journey · HD Historically Disputed

Introduction

Janamsakhis and Bhai Gurdas remember a Mecca visit. Modern historians differ sharply. Recorded with respect as disputed tradition.

The Journey

The Mecca episode is central in Sikh travel tradition (including the sleeping-with-feet-toward-the-Kaaba story in later tellings). It is historically disputed in academic literature. This site does not erase the tradition and does not convert it into proven fact.

The Sakhi

According to Sikh tradition, when told to turn his feet from the Kaaba, Guru Nanak Dev Ji asked that they be placed where God was not — and the direction of holiness could not be confined. This is tradition, told as teaching, not as a filmed event.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Teaching

The Divine is not locked in one compass-point.

Historical Context

Approximate period: Traditionally placed in the Udasis of Guru Nanak Dev Ji (often dated by later writers to the late 15th and early 16th centuries). Exact years are not established.

Chronology uncertain / traditional sequence only.

Sikh Historical Tradition

The claim exists in tradition, but there is significant historical uncertainty. Modern historians differ on this destination.

Janamsakhi recensions and later Sikh memory are not treated here as interchangeable with independently proven itinerary. Where evidence is thinner, the status label says so.
