The Journey

The Sakhi

According to Sikh tradition, Guru Nanak Dev Ji met a Muslim mystic known as Majnu on the Yamuna bank. The place later known as Majnu Ka Tilla remembers that meeting. Details of dialogue vary by telling.

The Delhi tradition emphasises spiritual friendship across religious lines and the search for God beyond labels.

Historical Context

Approximate period: Traditionally placed in the Udasis of Guru Nanak Dev Ji (often dated by later writers to the late 15th and early 16th centuries). Exact years are not established.

Delhi was the imperial capital. A highway (later the Grand Trunk Road) ran toward Punjab — relevant to the Nanak Piao tradition further north in the city.

People associated: Majnu (traditional name of the Yamuna-bank devotee); Bhai Mardana Ji.
