Haridwar (a major tirtha on the Ganga) appears in janamsakhi accounts of the first Udasi. The visit is Sikh historical tradition: widely told, not independently dated to a calendar year.

The Sakhi

According to Sikh tradition, Guru Nanak Dev Ji saw pilgrims throwing water toward the rising sun for ancestors. He threw water in another direction, saying that if water could reach the dead, it could reach his fields farther west. The story teaches against mechanical ritual without understanding.

Remembrance of the One, honest living, and compassion matter more than inherited ceremony performed without inner truth.
